Watch here how Covenant Care's My Wish creates an experience where every child and adult, regardless of the difficulty of his or medical journey, can share joy, hope, and peace.
A young girl with shaggy golden bangs and a radiant smile. Her father, laid in a hospital bed, battling the heroic fight against colon cancer. At much too young an age, she is his caregiver in his difficult days, full of hope for remission.
This was the bittersweet setting into which Covenant Care’s My Wish program was able to inject some joy.
Makiah was about to turn 12. While other girls spent their days playing with friends, Makiah was by her father’s bed as the cancer drained his body. Amid this somber backdrop, Covenant Care saw an opportunity to help.
Asked what wish he might want granted, Makiah’s father wished not for himself, but for his daughter. His wish – a birthday celebration for Makiah – was made real thanks to Covenant Care, and his love for his daughter was commemorated with a silver, heart-shaped locket engraved with the words, “Always know I love you, Dad.”
It was a simple, special gift designed to remind a daughter of her father's love after he's gone. As she unwrapped the locket and read the engraving at her father’s side, Makiah looked up and met his weary smile with a gleaming smile of her own.
Along with the locket, Covenant Care was able to provide Makiah with a laptop for her school work.
“I’m grateful to be here and to have met this amazing family and this beautiful, beautiful child,” said Angela Bottesini, Covenant Care’s Senior Director of the My Wish program. “I’ll tell you, anybody would want to be a part of something like this.”
This wish was made possible by Peaden Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical. Stories like Makiah’s are made possible thanks to supporters of the My Wish program. For information on how to get involved, visit MyWish.org.
